Volunteering at Monkey Mia

Are you interested in working in the tourism industry? Do you want to learn more about conservation management? Do you want to give something back to the community and the environment? Then volunteering at Monkey Mia might be for you!

Volunteers play an important role in helping to manage the Monkey Mia Reserve, the Monkey Mia visitor centre and the Dolphin Interaction Program. They not only assist staff with the wildlife interaction, but enhance the stay of visitors by providing information about the dolphins, the Reserve and the surrounding Shark Bay World Heritage Area.

What will I be doing?

The type of work you will do depends on the time of year, visitor numbers, the weather and other factors, but will generally be hands-on field (outside) work including:
  • assisting with dolphin feeds
  • preparation of fish for dolphin feeds
  • cleaning of fish room
  • dolphin data collection and collation
  • site maintenance (sweeping floors, beach rubbish removal, gardening etc)
  • walk trail maintenance
  • visitor surveys
  • assisting with educational activities.
Please note that a good knowledge of spoken and written English is essential.

Volunteers work from Monday to Sunday, 7:30 am to 12 noon and sometimes later. The minimum amount of time you can volunteer is four days, the maximum is two weeks. Lots of people want to volunteer, so you must tell us what dates you will be available so we can confirm if we have any vacancies.

Transport

Monkey Mia is 24km from the main town site of Denham. The Department of Environment and Conservation cannot provide volunteers or work experience participants with regular transport to the Monkey Mia visitor centre. You must arrange your own transport to the site on a daily basis.

However, the Bay Lodge Backpackers in Denham runs a courtesy bus that can take you to and from Monkey Mia daily if you are a guest. The Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, a short walk from the Visitor Centre, also has a range of accommodation available.

Accommodation

Shark Bay District is unable to provide volunteers or work experience participants with accommodation. A range of accommodation, including backpacking accommodation, caravan and camping sites, is available in Denham and at Monkey Mia.
